Fashion Friday: Black Halo Interview

Happy Fashion Friday!

So something totally awesome happened last week! I was contacted by my local Neiman Marcus in Boca Raton to interview Laurel Berman, founder and lead designer of Black Halo, as she is coming into town for an event tomorrow, Saturday at 11am (details below). My heart broken into a million designer pieces when I realized I will be on a business trip and unable to attend, luckily we were able to arrange a phone interview while Laurel was in a cab visiting NYC and I was trying out the Marilyn Monroe collection at MAC. Gotta love technology!

From speaking with her for just 20 minutes, I absolutely fell in love with Laurel and wished I could jump through the phone and hang out with her, even if it was just in a cab. She truly is such a talented designer (Black Halo is based out of L.A. and has been going strong for the past 10 years!) and also an amazing role model for women. Here’s what Laurel had to say when we chatted…

What was the concept to your now iconic Jackie O Dress?

I wanted to create a tailored statement, something that spoke to me personally, and that won’t go out of style. It’s the power suit for women…a power dress!  But something that also gives a bit of a sexual edge!

Jackie O’s: Original Classic. Off Shoulder. Two-Tone. 3/4 Sleeve. Original Classic Baby Pink.* Cotton Twill.

Who is the quintessential “Black Halo woman”?

A career woman, who is fashion savvy, ranging anywhere from 20 to 50 years old.

Can you recall the very first celebrity you dressed or that you saw wearing your design?

Absolutely! Kelly Ripa wore the Jackie O Dress back in 2008.  Before her however, Mandy Moore wore one of my skirts with a silk camisole on the cover of Lucky Magazine.

Your designs have such amazing structure and truly do create a powerful, yet sexy look. Why do you feel, as a designer, it’s so important to provide this look in today’s fashion world?

I wanted to design for the woman I am, a working woman, who needs a dress that is clean and isn’t embellished. If a dress fits and the woman wearing it feel good in it, it changes her mood. When a woman has confidence, she shines! The best thing I could give a woman is confidence and to empower her. I want to help to do this for all different types of events and occasions, for all different types of women.

Favorite trends for Fall?

Those rich, dark red colors like Bordeux and Merlot. And leather, the Leather Jackie O Dress is coming soon!

If you could provide the readers of Live Love Lipstick one piece of fashion advise, what would it be?

It’s all about fit.  Don’t buy anything on sale that isn’t your size.  Invest in pieces that you’ll get a lot of mileage out of.  Items that are versatile, have longevity, and are timeless are worth the money.

Here are some of my favorite pieces currently in the Black Halo collection:

Monet Print Jagger Dress. Orbison Skirt. Waldorff Dress. Alexander Dress.  Severine Jumpsuit. Vamp Mini.

If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by Neiman Marcus to meet Laurel in person and be sure to let her know I say hi! And if anyone wants to be a doll and pick me up a new Jackie O in my size I’d surely appreciate it!

Humpday Helper: A Vitamin A Day…

I’ve been nagged by whole life to take my vitamins by my mother.  Now that I’m married her role has been replaced by my husband Jared.  I’ve just always had a hard time remembering to actually take them, but I’ve recently realized it’s because I’ve always kept them in the bathroom, when clearly that’s already the sole home to my makeup.

I can proudly say that I now remember to take them everyday after breakfast while at my desk at work.  I was only able to accomplish this by buying a pill box, but unfortunately the one I bought makes me look like Sophia from the Golden Girls.  Here are some cuter ones to get the job done!

Functional.  Glitzy.  Secretive.  Mother’s Little Helper.  Ran Into My Ex.  Barely Survived.  Fabulous.  Will Power.  Used to Care.

Stay Healthy!

POP Goes Sephora with NARS Andy Warhol Collection

So since yesterday I wrote about MAC’s Marilyn Monroe Collection, I thought it’d be fitting to take a look into the exclusive and limited edition Nars Andy Warhol Collection.  Being a retro nut, I’m loving all of these recent collections and collaborations!

For the 25th anniversary year of Warhol’s death, it is the very first time the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts has teamed up and collaborated with a cosmetic line, Francois Nars has created a 29-piece collection exclusive to Sephora until November 1st.

Here are a few of my faves, but not sure if I could bring myself to actually use the products.  They’re almost as beautiful as the late legendary artist’s paintings!

Debbie Harry Eye & Cheek Palette. Kiss Mini Larger Than Life Lip Gloss Coffret. Flowers Eyeshadow Palette. New York Dolls Nail Polish.

Be sure to also check out Sephora’s website for behind the scenes video, as well as video tutorials on how to achieve the Electric Pop and the Underground Pop looks.

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays: MAC’s Marilyn Monroe Lipstick

Well, I am definitely suffering a real case of the Mondays as I returned late last night from an amazing NYC trip with my best friend.  Back to reality and back to work (on Columbus Day no less), sigh.

Anywho, last Thursday MAC launched the highly anticipated Marilyn Monroe Collection.  I had an appointment with the phenomenal Ina at my Boca Bloomingdales to check out the collection that I’ve been counting down the days for.  I was floored when I arrived and saw that half of the collection was already sold out.  And not just in Bloomingdales, but in all of the other MAC counters in the mall, as well as on MAC’s website.  I panicked.  The low supply high demand of the collection only made me want it more, especially my favorite absolute product of the line, the Charmed I’m Sure, a dark true red lipstick, which looked almost like a raspberry shade on me.  While sitting in the chair as Ina finished my look, I started frantically trying to track down a tube on my phone.  After seeing that the $16.50 lipstick was now being sold for as much as $75 on eBay, I practically started sweating.  This was apparently the Tickle-Me-Elmo of lipsticks and I clearly wasn’t going to be able to sleep that night if I didn’t secure one.

While I should have been finishing packing for my trip, I started calling stores in New York thinking I’d have an easier time trying to find one there as there are tons of stores and counters in the city.  Wrong.  Sold out everywhere!  Getting desperate, I started calling other stores in South Florida.  The lipstick gods, as well as Marilyn herself, must have been looking out for me because I finally tracked one down!  I’d be able to board my flight the next morning with ease.  The next step was having to convince my husband to pick it up for me at the mall that is about 30 minutes away from us the next day.  How he puts up with me, I don’t know (although I’m sure he just did it to shut me up), but I am now the proud owner of a Tickle-Me-Elmo, I mean the Marilyn Monroe Charmed I’m Sure lipstick!

Fashion Friday: Target Designer

Well folks, Target is at it again!  They recently brought on designer Kirna Zabete for a fun line at of course great prices!

Here my picks of the litter (including two that I’ve already purchased!), none of which are over $50!

(Let me preface by saying that I’m not a huge fan of some of the images on the website.  The styling is a bit much where they’ve paired multiple pieces together, i.e. long sleeve shirt and pants with what I first thought was a cute dress on top.  And here I thought I had already referenced Joey’s “Could I be wearing any more clothes?!” in my Target Sweaters post last month…)

Black and White Sweater: Purchased already!  So incredibly cozy and will look great with some yellow flats.

Navy & Black Colorblock Blazer: I don’t fit into most blazers because of my marionette arms, but for a normal person this would look with black skinny pants.

Red Patent Hard Case Clutch: Snagged it the second it caught my eye in the store!  So DVF but so for $34.99!

Sleeveless Tie Front Blouse: Love the pattern and it too fulfills my love of black and white.  Could pair with anything!

Blue Snake Classic Handbag – I really like the color and structure.  Would go great with any of the black and white pieces in the collection.

Fishnet Tights: Great pair of fishnets with a cool pattern to wear with a fun and flirty black dress.

Happy Fashion Friday!

Flat Iron Follow-Up

A couple weeks ago I shared with you all that I was on the hunt for a new flat iron as my Sedu Revolution Tourmaline Ionic Styling Iron was on the fritz.  I’ve been asked what I ended up going with so I wanted to give you a quick follow-up.

So after all of the researching, it occurred to me that I was a wise shopper initially (obvi) and had purchased my Sedu from the amazing website folica.com and that my iron was still under the 2 year warranty!  My straightening prayers had been answered!  I was a bit skeptical of the easy exchange that was claimed on the site’s warranty page, but nonetheless I filled out the Warranty Replacement Form, said my goodbyes, and shipped the iron back to the Customer Returns Department.

Fear not, I was still able to leave the house as I picked up a back-up, the Remington TStudio Ceramic Pearl Slim 1’’ Flat Iron from Target (also offered on folica.com of course) as my temporary straightener (plus, it never hurts to keep a spare in the house).  I’d like to mention that I was pleasantly surprised with the Remington, I’m not going to say it was as good as my Sedu but I really did like it!  Inexpensive, digital, AND has an auto-shut off!

Anywho, much to my surprise just days after sending my Sedu back to Folica, I had received an email notifying me that they had received my product and a new one had been shipped.  Wait, what??  I didn’t have to wait weeks or even months?  I didn’t have to explain further what the issues were?  A DNA sample proving I was the owner wasn’t required?  Remy and I were just getting to know one another!  Clearly there had been some mistake and while the email was great, surely I wasn’t going to receive a new one that easily.  And then, just a few days after that, a magical Folica box was waiting for me on my doorstep.  Inside was a fresh, brand new Sedu just dying to remove my frizz and make my hair shiny again!

Moral of the story is, whichever straightener (or any other hair product for that matter) tickled your fancy I can not recommend folica.com enough!
