This past Saturday night I attended the Reid & Fiorentino Celebrity Dinner, an amazing annual charity event that bring together some of South Florida’s biggest celebrities (including Miami Heat’s James Jones who I’m pictured with below as we were seated at the same table, woop woop) to benefit charities such as Lauren’s Kids. Lauren’s Kids, founded by my friend Lauren Book, educates adults and children about sexual abuse topics through in-school curriculum, a 24 hour hotline, and speaking engagements around the country. (For all of the teachers out there, learn about Lauren’s curriculum here.) Lauren was a victim of childhood sexual abuse for six years at the hands of her nanny. She has since turned tragedy into triumph and has devoted her life to educating children so they know they all matter and that if something were to ever happen, it’s ok to tell. Recently named the 2013 L’Oreal Woman of Worth National Honoree and featured on The Katie Couric Show, Lauren is a true leader in the community and someone I admire greatly. Not to mention she’s just about the sweetest thing with a heart of gold!
As if her daily efforts weren’t enough, yesterday she kicked off her fifth (that’s FIFTH) “Walk in My Shoes Event”, which brings together survivors and advocates on a walk across Florida to raise awareness and promote support legislation. Her walk now consists of 1,500 miles and she does every single one with a smile on her face!
