My G-g-generation

Spoiler Alert: This is one of those completely random posts that has nothing to do with anything and merely me just taking advantage of having a blog to express some arbitrary thoughts.

So I have had the same group of best friends since elementary school.  I’m not a spaz who’s never made a new friend since, just someone who’s been fortunate enough to make it through my adolescence (including the immature, hormonal AND bitchy years of growing up as a girl) without killing my girlfriends and them not killing or hating me.  We’re now spread out geographically with two of us living down here, one in NYC, one in NJ, and one in DC and yet we still manage to keep abreast of every detail of one’s life, important as well as insignificant.  Well Miss New Jersey was down this weekend visiting her family and while home she did thing ever and rummaged through old photographs, texting them to all of us.  Besides laughing so obnoxiously that Jared wanted to kill me, a couple of things came to mind…

Kids/Teens these days vs Us: While we’re not exactly fossils yet (still in our 20s, hey hey!), it becomes more and more apparent that we’re getting old.  The basketball belly of mine is adding as a daily reminder to me.  Well, the differences of the shit we dealt with versus what kids these days deal with are blinding!

solano

Let’s just talk appearance wise first.  Kids these days are much more attractive and as they should be!  They’re getting braces earlier, there’s even invisalign if their rents find them worthy enough to make the investment, that already helps your awkward phase by 40%!  Growing up in So Fla the humidity was our biggest enemy.  And what did we have to deal with?  Courtyard schools and outdoor portables..inhumane!  Thus our biggest goal in life was to defend humidity which even lead some girls to PERMS during middle school.  Luckily I dodged that bullet but some of us weren’t as lucky (cough cough Pam).  We then became guinea pigs for the flat iron.  These were not the best back then,  ConAir thought they’d be geniuses and create one with a little built-in steamer.  You legit loaded this thing with water as if it was an f-ing Super Soaker (Do kids these days even know what those are?…ok, point for us)!  Because let’s bring more water, steam and humidity to the hair!  Then there was the Solano (see above photo for reference).  This should now only be purchased from Antiques Road Show these days.  It was like 20 pounds (way too heavy for my marionette arms back then seeing as I was like 60 pounds soaking wet…and I wondered why I didn’t have a boyfriend) and fried your hair to death!  But hey, you successfully had straight hair from the time you were home until half way through 1st period.  Victory!!  There were none of these amazing blow dry bars and apparently the only makeup that was relatively known to us was Wet and Wild and NYX and only later we were luckily introduced to MAC.  Now I see these girls frolicking about in Sephora making stupid jokes about whether they like being “Naked” or “Naked 2” and laughing their asses off in reference to the same Urban Decay palette that I own.  Wtf??  They deserve to suffer in their awkward years just like we had to.  In middle school (aka the haven of awkward years) to accommodate for dress code, we were stuck in bell bottom jeans from Wet Seal and sneaks from Steve Madden that resembled that of moon shoes.  Man we looked like idiots.  (I would share one of these prized photos, but you may never take beauty or fashion advice from me again.)  Once in high school we had the privilege of finally putting our Seventeen Prom issues to use and attend homecomings and proms.  Now girls these days really don’t know how lucky they are when it comes to formal dances!  I see younger siblings and relatives of friends of mine strutting around in their little dresses and there’s no tool, no glitter, no butterfly clips in hair.  No, instead they’re in the same Parker and Alice + Olivia sequin dresses that we rock ourselves on New Years Eve.  Cool.  Poor Jessica McClintock…

Now on to the differences between socializing.  What do they even do these days??  I just picture every teen to be acting out Miley Cyrus’s terrible new music video and I cringe.  Growing up in our town it went from hanging out at the Roller Skating Rink to then the Ice Rink to then just basically driving around like idiots thinking we were the shit because we drove.  Not to mention COUNTLESS meals at T.G.I.Friday’s.  Like how are they still in business now that our generation doesn’t go?  Now girls just dress up in crop tops and take selfies and probably sext and Snap Chat with the loser boys they want to flirt with.  How did we communicate?  It went from calling each other on our family’s landline, to scoring your own landline (sa-weet!), to writing notes, to sharing a notebook (with alias names of course), to beeper codes, to chat rooms and screen names, to cell phones, and finally to now keeping an on-going group text message between the five of us.  (Our world is now that much better with emojis because that’s how lame we are.)  There were no iPhones, iPods, iPads.  Instead, we had mixed tapes and eventually mixed CDs.  Although we had N’Sync which probably trumps anything kids are listening on their schmancy devices, another point for us.

In summary we sure missed out on a hell of a lot of cool stuff that kids growing up now totally take for granted, but we also know the joys of the Oreo Madness and those fools are simply missing out.

(And just kidding to any teen readers out there, I’m just bitter because you guys rock and don’t have to use disposable cameras that you have to turn the flash on and wind up.)

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend!  We were able to spend time with one of my closest friends who was down visiting, as well as kept the celebrations going for my sister-in-law’s birthday and recent engagement!

sheen supremes

A couple of year’s ago MAC came out with their Sheen Supreme Lipsticks and last Thursday they came out with six new, five of which are limited edition, colors that I’m lovinggg!!  These $16 lipsticks combine the color of a lipstick with the shine of their Lipglass and just feel so comfortable on the lips!

candy apple

pret-a-pretty

The two I snatched up (even pre-ordered them in fear that they would immediately sell out because I’m that pathetic) were Candy Apple and Pret-a-Pretty.  Candy Apple is such a flattering warm plum color that will probably be my favorite color to wear for Fall, can’t wait!  When I initially tried on Pret-a-Pretty, a soft warm pink, I thought it was all wrong for me.  Almost looked too white-ish looking and washed me out.  But then once we paired it with Subculture lip pencil and put a little Pinkarat Lustreglass on top, I was in love.  Worn with some dramatic smokey eyes and I think it’ll be the perfect combo!

Cheers to a great week!

Fashion Friday

Happy Friday!

So it’s August, what the hell? How did that happen?  That means that you only have a little longer to wear all of your cute summer items that you’ve been saving because they’re that cute.  Only a couple more manis and pedis to use your fav bright polishes of the season.  That you get to start drooling over all of the Fall collections that are already flooding the stores.  And yet for me it really just means my belly is getting bigger and bigger and I’ll soon just be choosing what Fall style tarps I’ll be wrapping around my body.

I know I recently shared a pair of flats with you all that I’m drooling over, but I wanted to share yet another style as simple flats are perfect to wear for the rest of Summer, Fall, and for preggers like me. You can’t go wrong!  Now the only question left for you to answer is whether you want to Splurge or Save?

Splurge: Chloe Scalloped Flats, $475

Save: J.Crew Scalloped Ballet Flats, $158

Have a great weekend!

Humpday Helper

So I was trying to come up with a helpful tip and instead of anything regarding beauty, makeup, and fashion the only thing I had on my brain was sweets.  I had my glucose test yesterday to make sure I haven’t developed gestational diabetes and because of it I had to steer away from sweets all day.  This shouldn’t be hard, it really shouldn’t.  But it was.  Typically I’m a kid at heart when it comes to sweets (as I’ve expressed numerous times before) and head right to gummy bears, Sour Patch, etc but yesterday I surpassed even those.  All I wanted was a true dessert.  What I would have done for a brownie sundae!  So the one thing I figured I could share with you all today are my recent finds in the sweet world that deliver anywhere.

scottcakes

When we visited Provincetown, Cape Code about a month ago for my grandma’s 85th birthday Jared and I discovered what could very well be the best cupcakes we’ve ever had in our lives.  Scottcakes (website currently being developed) only does one kind of cupcake, with one kind of frosting: vanilla cake with pink buttercream frosting.  Period.  The only variations are mini and regular size, as well as special gluten free cupcakes.  And they are insaaaaane.  I highly recommend for the next time you want to send someone something sweet!

woops

We also just discovered Macarons and Cookies by Woops when we were in New Jersey recently and I was blown away after reluctantly trying one (not a huge french macaron fan since I think they tend to just be dried out tasting) and realized they were my favorite macarons I had ever tried in my life.  And I’ve not only had them in the states but in London and PARIS.  Why are they better than any I’ve had in Paris?!  I don’t know, but they were.  Granted I’m preggos right now, but my opinion was backed by others.  My fav flavors included Cafe, Caramel Fleur de Sel, and (wait for it….) Nutella, yumm!  They have a couple of locations in NY and NJ, but will of course also ship.  If you’re a fan of macarons and even if you don’t think you are, definitely try them out!

Enjoy!

Celebrations

I have to take a quick time out talking about silly products that I certainly don’t need to wish a very happy birthday to my sister-in-law, Jessica!!  Today is her 26th birthday and what makes it that much more special is the fact that she got engaged this past Friday to the love of her life!  My heart is so full for her and I couldn’t be happier for the two of them to become husband and wife.

I have known Jessica since she was just 17 years old and even though we’re only two years apart, it’s crazy to have watched her grow up into such a beautiful woman.  Despite the fact that she picked up way too many bad habits from my husband, she laughs at her own jokes (and is thus the only one…), and by far has the worse memory in the world, she is one of my very best friends and I love her like a true sister.

Happy Birthday Jess and I can’t wait to celebrate all of the great things that are to come for you!

And just when you thought I was being too mushy, I tried finding the most embarrassing photo that I could of the two of us (just be happy that digital cameras were still kind of a rare thing in the beginning years of knowing you). What are big sisters for?!

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays

My apologies for those who subscribe to the blog and accidentally received this prematurely last night.  And for those of you who don’t subscribe, what are you waiting for?

So everyone, how much is too much to spend on makeup?  (How Carrie Bradshaw of a question to start out today’s blog?)  Well as much of a fan I am of Chanel cosmetics, I’m not exactly winning the Powerball anytime soon so I have to just drool over most of the line.  I love my Chanel Lipgloss #119 Wild Rose, but that’s the only product from the line I currently own.

119 wild rose

I am always so tempted to try out the Sheer Illuminating Base Primer.  It not only fills in pores and lines, it helps even out skin tones, and I’ve heard it’s worth every penny.  All 4,500 pennies.  Another product that I have been meaning to treat myself to is the #104 Passion Lipstick, such a ridiculously gorgeous red lipstick!

base primer 104 passion

Well now I have a new product to add to my Lust List , Chanel’s new Limited-Edition (those winning Powerball numbers better come to me soon!) Hydra Beauty Essence Mist.  This luxurious, lightweight spray hydrates with a fresh, cool mist of enriched moisture.  It restores, strengthens and sustains skin at its most optimal state.  You can use over or under makeup for a refreshed look.  But is it worth the money??  Hmm..

Cheers to a great week!
