It’s Officially Fall.

So living in South Florida it’s pretty hard to distinguish when Summer ends and when Fall begins (hence the reason why it probably seems like I keep teetering between the two in my posts, sorry!) since it’s still hot as ever, humid as can be, and the afternoon rain has yet to cease.  Now I may not be a meteorologist but I do have my own way of determining the beginning of what just so happens to be my favorite season (and no it’s not a Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte, apparently I’m the only girl who doesn’t go cookoo for that stuff)…my nail polish.  Two weeks ago I had my last “summer mani/pedi” and donned OPI’s OPI on Collins Ave (a fab coral red shade) and this week I was able to remove it and say goodbye to bright nails and toes until next Spring.  I couldn’t have been more excited.  Seriously, it’s sad when switching to “fall nail polish shades” is one of the main highlights of your week, sigh.

Now came the hard part, what color would I choose?  Huge decision.  I knew I wanted to try out one of the new amazing colors from Essie’s fall line, but which one?  Since we are still in what I refer to as the transition phase, I knew I couldn’t go super dark (even though I’m of course beyond antsy to try out Stylenomics, which I had recently featured in my hunter green post), so I opted for Miss Fancy Pants.  It’s a beautiful grey/purple/putty shade that was perfect for said shift.  And who doesn’t love that name?!  Makes me feel like I’m channeling my inner Heather Dubrow!  Couldn’t have been happier with my choice, Fall is now here!

On a personal side note, I also want to mention what else makes this day so significant, my beautiful adorable delicious niece Kariin is now 2!  Well she’ll actually be two tomorrow but since she lives in Japan (aka the future), by the time you’re reading this today the ridiculous kiddo will probably already be celebrating.  Happy Birthday Munchkin!!

Now tell me you don’t want to pin this to your Pinterest “Top Knot” board right now!

Humpday Helpers

So my helpful tip this week may be getting a little personal, I’m sorry.  But my life (or my life when it comes to underwear) has recently been changed.  I have discovered the best pair of underwear ever.  It’s comfortable, comes in a million colors, and it’s cheap.  Like CHEAP, CHEAP.  I’m talking about the Allover Lace Thongs from Forever 21 and they are an (almost) exact replica of Hanky Panky’s Signature Low Rise Thongs, except these are $2.80, as opposed to $20 a pop.

Now I know I may be freaking people out right about now (A. I’m blogging about underwear, cool and B. I’m blogging about insanely inexpensive underwear), however if I could tell everyone I know to buy these, I would.  And thus this post was born.

Order a pair and thank me later.  And I apologize again if I’ve left you singing Sisqo all day …

We Remember

I wanted to take a break from ranting and raving about the latest and greatest to remember this very significant day.  Never forget. 9/11/01.

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays: Prime Time

So I’m sure some of you read my posts (hopefully people are out there reading…Bueller? Bueller?) and wonder to yourself if the products I tell you I love are really worth it.  And I get that.  Certainly not everybody is like me and is dying to try out every new product that comes out, regardless if I already have 10 other synonymous products at home.  Well I’m here to say that if there’s one thing I believe is essential to your makeup regimen, it’s primer.   You wouldn’t paint a wall without first applying a coat of primer, would you?  (I don’t think you would at least…it’s not like I’m going to sit here and try to convince you that I just painted a house over the weekend {spoiler alert!} and I’m now a painting pro, but I’m pretty sure the answer is no.)  Well then there’s no reason you should paint your face or nails without applying it either.  Oh, and for the record here are all of the different varieties of primer that I currently have and play with – thank goodness for samples!

To break it down here are the five types of primer that I consider a must:

Face Primer: I can honestly say I see a huge difference in my face makeup when I use a good primer.  It sets makeup and gives an all over even finish.  Applied after moisturizer it basically acts like an amazing canvas to the rest of your face makeup.

My current favorite is Stila’s One Step Correct, it color corrects, brightens, primes, and nourishes all in one.  I feel like it helps my makeup stay so much longer!  Just squeeze one pump into your hand, blend together, and apply!  While it’s $36, it definitely lasts me a long time!

I’m also wanting to try Hourglass’s N28 Primer Serum and the Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15.  I’ve heard great things about both of these, but they’re definitely pricey (both over $50)!  I’ve actually also read a lot about people using Lanacane Anti Chafing Gel as face primer.  This definitely sounds a little nutty, but from what I’ve heard I say it’s worth the $5 test!

Lash Primer: As I mentioned in my smokey eye tutorial last week, I swear by lash primer.  It lengthens and conditions and makes a very dramatic difference!

By far my absolute fav is the Dior Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum, worth every penny in my opinion ($28).  Before discovering the Dior primer, I was using Smashbox’s Layer Lash Primer which is a little less money at $17 but still does the job.  Just make sure you wipe the wand to remove the excess primer.

Eyeshadow Primer: Once again this helps create a smooth surface for your shadows to glide on (preventing clumping, ick) and helps the shadow last.  Don’t forget to apply it all over the eye, including below.

While I really love the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion Tube ($20), I usually apply my mascara first, clean up the mess on my lids, and then apply my shadow, I like the BUXOM Stick Around Eye Primer ($20) since it doesn’t require you to rub anything in (which of course could result in you messing up your fabulous lashes).

Lip Primer: I make sure to use my lip primer when using a bold lipstick and liner as it helps the color last and makes the lips very moisturized, preventing any dreaded drying or feathering.

My favorite is the MAC Prep + Prime Lip ($16) which feels amazing on the lips!  Urban Decay also makes a Lip Primer Potion that gets great reviews and is just a couple dollars more ($20).

Nail Polish Base Coat: The primer to your nails.  This helps extend the wear of a mani, prevents staining, and creates a smooth nail surface.  Obvi a must.

Some that I like right now are Sally Hansen Diamond Strength Hardener ($7), CND Nail Stickey Base Coat ($7), and Seche Clear (on Amazon for under $4).  I’m also wanting to try Nail Inc. Kensington Caviar Base Coat ($10 – just fell in love with the top coat btw) as it claims “Clients can get an extra two days wear from their manicure when they use Kensington Caviar base coat.”

Prime away!

Fashion Friday: Target Sweaters

So during a quick Target run with a deprived Alexis visiting from NYC last weekend, we discovered what could be our new favorite sweaters of the season (might I add that they were only $22.99?!).  Only problem is, out of the four different variations of the sweater, they only had one of them in my size.  That may be reasonable and even acceptable for most people, but as you’ve probably already discovered I’m not “most people”.  The sweater suddenly became the Holy Grail to me, I needed the complete collection.  And no, they were not available online except for the purple love one, i.e. the one that I had managed to snag in my size, thanks Target (although I see now that they have added the blue heart one I’m wearing above).  I may or may not have also checked eBay in case there were others on the hunt of these low supply, high demand gems.  And yes, since each of the sweaters aren’t online you’re stuck with yours truly modeling (coming from the girl who was hiding behind her dog in yesterday’s post and now I’m all “look at me, look at me”, fear not I won’t make a habit out of this), don’t let this get you deterred from falling head over heels.

I flirted with admitting to you guys how many Targets I actually ventured to in a two day span, but I may lose readers by doing so.  Seriously.  The important part is I’m proud to say my collection is complete, I am the proud owner of all four.  The shakes have subsided.  I can sleep well.  Just so you know, any comment that you’re making to yourself while shaking your head and possibly also rolling your eyes that I’m cray cray…believe me, I’m fully aware of it and am reminded daily by my husband.  I’m also well aware that I live in South Florida and will be able to wear these for all of 45 minutes this season, but whatever, my office is cold.  Or maybe I’ll just wear them all at once like Joey…

By now are you just jumping out of your seat reading this dying to know what each of these infamous sweaters look like before you grab your keys and run to Target?  Feast your eyes on this fabulousness (hope that didn’t just make me sound like Teresa Giudice, who’s managed to practically trademark the prefix “fab”, ok sorry I know now I’m just teasing you all with anticipation)…

I don’t know who decided that foxes are “in” this season, but they definitely are and this little guy is no exception!  I also love the attention to detail that was put in to them, with a random color stitched on the inside of the collar, which actually helped give me inspiration as to what I could pair it with!

Owl sweater paired with Gap Sexy Boyfriend Jeans & Gap Suede Loafers in Electric Fuchsia (Side note: 25% off all online orders with promo code GAPFALL25 until 9/9)

Love sweater paired with Gap Cropped Legging Jean (color no long available online) & J Crew Classic Leather Ballet Flats in Tawny Sand

Fox sweater paired with AG Prima Mid Rise Cigarette Jeans (new fav jeans purchased here for almost half off!!) & J Crew Classic Leather Ballet Flats in Golden Sunflower (color no longer available online)

So, I wish you all good luck on your mission on getting your paws on your fav version, should you choose to accept it.

Baring it All

So I had a different post planned for today.  I was going to go over the things that I’m most looking forward to in the month of September, after kicking it off to a great start with one of my best friends, Alexis, who came to visit me this past weekend.  This said friend gave me a mouthful the other morning after discovering that I didn’t provide a tutorial or include a pic of the finished “Forever 21 smokey eye” look from Tuesday’s post.  Well, at least she’s reading it!  I am grateful to have such amazing and honest friends, however I’m not so grateful for having in my mind a ridiculously narrow and long face, a lack-of-a-slope nose, and a gummy smile (I know, so Mean Girls of me, but we’re our biggest critics, right?).  Thus I’ve tried to avoid posting a mug shot of myself, but seeing as Lex isn’t the first of my friends to tell me this I’ve decided to bite the bullet. I guess I can’t hide behind Fozzie forever…

Before I do so, I must preface a couple of things (I’m big on prefacing, although it drives everyone I know mad): I’m not a professional makeup artist.  I don’t think I know everything.  I’m just your average girl who has a fixation with this stuff.  I don’t take self portraits of myself in mirrors (except when sending to my best friends to help decide if what I’m wearing is a ‘red light’ or ‘green light’).  I count my lucky stars that makeup and the straightening iron were invented.  So as Hannah from Girls puts it “Any mean thing that someone’s gonna think of to say about me I’ve already said to me, about me, probably in the last half-hour.”

That all being said, I do want you all to be able to connect with me and for me to post helpful tips, so after getting lectured I ran to Forever on my lunch break to purchase the other items to help complete the look that evening (may I also add that while running into the mall a huge black cat ran in front of me…awesome sign).  One last thing, close-ups of applying makeup are uber awkward unflattering!  Ok I’m done.

Here are the steps I took to accomplish a smokey eye for under $13.

After curling my lashes and applying my eyeshadow primer (I used Urban Decay Primer Potion and Buxom Stick Around Eye Primer – which I’m loving using all around the eye, including below it) I started with the link pink shadow (1) on my brow bone:

Then I took the silver/grey color (2) and used that all over my lid:

After that I mixed a little of the silver/grey (2) and the shimmery charcoal (3) color and blended that in the crease of my eye.  I actually like doing this with my eye almost completely open so I can see how it will actually look.  I then took a little more of the shimmery charcoal (3) and started applying that to the corner, blending it up in the crease.

Next, I took a dab of the black shadow (4) and applied it to the corner of my eye for that dramatic, smokey look.

Once finished with the shadows, I used my small angle brush (love my MAC 266 Small Angle Brush) and applied the gel liner along my upper lash line (I know I included a liquid liner in Tuesday’s post, but they only had the gel liner in the store (it isn’t featured online, but was a whopping $2.80).  I had already applied regular black liner to my bottom lid (which I actually just use MAC’s Carbon eye shadow and the 266 brush for this – part of my “staples”).

Now we’re on to my favorite part, the lashes!  I first apply lash primer which is a MUST for me, #1 on the staple list!  My favorite is Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum, worth every penny in my opinion.  Then I gave a good two coats of the Mega Mascara and I was done!

But could I go through with the big reveal?  (I like to think my life is a TV show, and thus I hear Ty Pennington yelling “Move that MaltiPoo!” in the background, thanks for the words of encouragement Ty.)  Here goes nothing…

And here is the up close and personal finished look:

But shockingly enough I already had almost the identical products (gasp!) but by more expensive brands so I decided to use the similar type products to see the difference of what a smokey eye looks like for $71, compared to $13.  For this I used: Too Faced Naked Eye Soft & Sexy Eye Shadow Collection. Buxom Lashliner. Buxom Lash mascara.

All in all I can say that I truly am impressed with the Forever eyeshadow quad, as well as the gel liner!  The quad ended up being nice that the colors aren’t as bold, making it easy to layer as well as being easier to fix any goofs.  Call me a mascara snob, I can definitely tell a difference and I’m sticking with the good stuff!  Can you tell the difference of the two looks??

There, I did it (breathe).

Humpday Helper: Friendly Tips

So last month I spent a weekend in the Hamptons for one of my best friend’s bachelorette party. It was great to see everyone and even better that we were all under one roof (14 of us in total) in the house we rented. It reminded us of our college days and living in our sorority house. Best part was being able to share everyone’s makeup, clothes, and everything else that was packed (clearly way too much for one weekend – I’m thinking 5 packs of Sour Patch Kids may not have been necessary). We all left with lists of things that we couldn’t wait to purchase/download for ourselves. Here are some tips that we helped each other discover:

Mac highlighter – Soft and Gentle Mineralize Skinfinish Powder: As if I needed a new highlighter in my life…well I do, and it’s this one!

Vita Coco water – So apparently this can help cure any, err…rough morning.  When I think of the drink, I can’t help but think of Sacha Baron Cohen in The Dictator, which is why I already knew it “contains more potassium then you’ll find in two bananas”, thanks Admiral General Aladeen…

X-Mini – II Capsule Speaker – This little guy was great to have by the pool as well as indoors for blasting tunes. Available in a variety of colors for just $25.

Jennifer Zeuner Addison (Love) Bracelet – I fell in love with it after seeing my friend Jillian sport it. I’m thinking it could also look cute with a couple of Jennifer Zeuner’s other delicate bracelets. Best part is it’s adjustable for different size wrists!  Would be a great gift for a husband to buy for his wife. A husband that’s proud of his wife’s new blog, just saying…

Nasty Gal shopping website – Horrible name, cute clothes. Picture trendy, going out clothes at Urban Outfitters prices. I was already given this tip prior to the weekend from one of the other girls while we were on our quest for black dresses. I chose the Striped Mesh Peplum Dress and she chose the Peplum Party Dress and we were really happy with our purchases! But seriously though, what’s with the name?! Don’t go on this site while at work or your IT department may think you’re shopping for something else…

Cry (Just a Little) by Bingo Players – It was definitely the soundtrack for the weekend. Download today if it’s not already on your playlist.

Tanks – I wanted to note that we had the tanks seen at the top made by my friend’s printing, promotional, and marketing company, MRL Printing, as a surprise to the bachelorette. The style I went with were the Gildan Ultra Cotton Tank, which ended up fitting great as bathing suit cover ups! To order for your next party, visit www.mrlpromotions.com.

Hope it’s been helpful!
