The World of Bridesmaids Dresses

I hope everyone’s been enjoying our bridal week thus far!

So after you’ve chosen THE dress (stay tuned on that tomorrow!), you then start thinking about the other dresses: the bridesmaid dresses.  Just like your gown, you should take into consideration the mood of the wedding.  Is it outdoors, on the beach, in a ballroom, during the day, in the evening?  This should help you decide the length, fabric, color, etc.  You can choose one style or mix in a couple of styles (if doing so I would at least make sure you keep the fabric type consistent) as well as colors.  If you’re planning a formal affair, you can never go wrong with black as it is always chic, flattering, timeless, and classic.  My fav bridesmaid designers?  Amsale (some styles are even available at Nordstrom as well as bridal boutiques), Dessy, Priscilla of Boston, and J.Crew.

For my wedding I knew I wanted my girls in a simple chiffon full length gown, that didn’t exactly scream “bridesmaid dress”.  I opted to go with Amsale gowns in Eggplant (a very dark purple) and we had a mix of styles, two very similar to each other that the bridesmaids wore and then a third style that my Matrons of Honor wore.  It all came together really nicely and the girls looked beautiful!

As I gear up to serve as a bridesmaid for one of my very best friends, Steph, in just a couple of weeks, I of course can’t wait to watch her become a Mrs but I also can’t wait to see all of my girlfriends come together in our bridesmaid dresses as Steph picked such a gorgeous color palette!  She went with Amsale gowns and picked a stunning silhouette, G629C, as seen below:

g629c

She opted to have three of us in the Blush and three of us in the Graphite (again, in the style above):

Last but not least, her sister who is the MOH will be in the following style and gorg pattern, GA112C:

Fun side note: We may even go a little crazy and go with grey manis/pedis, thinking either Essie Smokin’ Hot or OPI You Don’t Know Jacques.  I live for pointless details like this.  Going to be uh-mazing!!

Humpday Helper: Wedding Edition

wedding shoes

Here is my Top 10 collection of random tips for the wedding edition of Humpday Helper:

1. Hire vendors you like.  You will be working with these folks a LOT, and if you’re anything like me I found it important to get along well with my vendors, for them to “get” Jared and I as a couple and understand the things we wanted.  When we were planning our wedding we had already been together for 6 years, so the honeymoon phase had already come and gone so we enjoyed when our vendors just had fun with us and we now consider many of them friends today.

2. Don’t follow trends too closely.  There will of course be things that are “in” that you will find yourself loving and wanting to incorporate in your big day.  Just remember that some trends last only months and memories as well as photos will last a lifetime.  I wanted to go for more timeless and classic looks to avoid looking back and feeling like I do whenever I watch The Wedding Singer.

3. Pre-address thank you cards.  Regardless if you’re having the envelopes printed or writing them yourself, once you have your final list prior to the wedding take the time to pre-address your thank you cards.  This will save you a ton of time after the wedding when you’re sitting in a pool of tears that it’s all over, going to town on the foods you’ve been avoiding like the plague for the past umpteen months, as well as the stress of knowing that you’re Great Aunt Shirley is thinking you’re a rude and unappreciative brat for not having her thank you card in her mailbox two days after the wedding.

4. When going for your first gown alterations, bring shoes and bra.  It’s best to have these items predetermined and ready to go so that the dress can start being fitted exactly as it should be.  Not sure of which shoe or bra will look and fit best?  Buy a couple and take the time at your first fitting to try on multiple options and just return what you don’t end up using.  Try purchasing items at retailers with excellent return policies, ex: Bloomies and Nordstroms.

5.  Don’t choose heels that you can’t even walk in when trying them on to purchase.  I know you want gorg heels for your wedding day, especially since they’ll more than likely be photographed.  If that’s the case, consider buying a second pair that are around the same heel length as you’re schmancy ones that you can change into whenever necessary.  Also, if you can’t see your shoes at all in your dress, consider wearing flats.  I know you’re all gasping thinking no way, no how…but I did it.  I had a princess style gown that you couldn’t see my feet at all and I decided to get adorable Kate Spade peep toe flats (as photographed above) that went with my gown since I wanted to be comfortable and wanted to avoid being taller than Jared in photos had I rocked a big heel (there was no way I was going to have Jessie Spano syndrome on my wedding day).  FYI, it was the best decision, hands down.  I was beyond comfortable and was able to dance the night away!  I did however change towards the end of the night into a shorter dress and that’s when I pulled out the big guns, but it didn’t even bother me since my feet had been so comfy before.

6. Don’t give an inappropriate speech.  This is more for the bridal party.  I’m very adamant that there are a couple very specific guidelines one should follow to have their speech not suck for everyone who has to listen to it; Nobody gets or cares about your inside jokes, so don’t just start blurting out one word references unless you want to hear a room full of crickets in return.  Don’t bring up exes or anything similar that would embarrass both parties.  I swear that should be a given but for some people it isn’t.  A good speech acknowledges both the bride and groom regardless who is giving the speech and makes it entertaining for everyone, both sweet and funny.  That’s the end goal here folks, tears and laughs.  Tears and laughs.

7.  Lay everything out the evening before the big day.  Whatever it is you’ll need and want for getting ready, lay it all out the night before so you know where everything is when you need it.  Anything that alleviates stress for you is a huge help!  You will also (hopefully) be able to fall asleep rest assured that you have everything you need and you’re not missing anything.  Speaking of sleep, make sure you get some.  Seriously.  I’m big on only having one or two people sleep in your room (if any) as opposed to some girls who want a whole slumber party.  Lay your stuff out, have a quick dance party due to the fact that you’re getting married in less than 24 hours (ahh!), take some Melatonin and go.to.sleep!! (I legit did all of the above, including and especially the impromptu dance party with my best friend.)

8. Eat a full breakfast.  Say goodbye to wedding diet.  Think of those food pyramids from elementary school and have a full balanced breakfast.  Protein AND carbs ladies!  The day will be such a whirlwind that you’ll barely remember to eat, and yet somehow you’ll be sure to remember to drink.  So to avoid feeling sick in your wedding gown, start the day off with food in your belly!  And if you suffer from nervous belly aches, pop some preventative Pepto Bismol pills and nosh on pretzels and ginger ale when getting ready.

9. If you’re having a cocktail party in between your ceremony and reception, use it to schmooze and mingle with relatives and family friends, ie. not your friends.  Take advantage of having everyone together in a room and go around to say your hellos and thank yous this way you have your whole reception to rock out on the dance floor with your pals.  If there was someone you didn’t get a chance to say hello to or they want to tell you again how fabulous you look (wouldn’t want to deny them the opportunity to do so, would you?!), they’ll come find you.  You’ll be the one in the white dress.

Last, but not least…

hora

10. Marry your best friend and remember that the wedding is just an event and the marriage is what you’re truly celebrating.  I’m grateful to have done so three years ago today.  Love you Jar.  (You better be reading this…)

Wedding Playlist

music heart

I know I’ve admitted before to being a bit serious when it comes to picking the appropriate tunes for an occasion so when it came time to think about the music for my reception, I was a tyrant.  I’m a firm believer that the songs can make or break a reception, regardless of how much or little you choose to spend on a band or DJ.  The mood that you want to set is of course completely subjective, but my goal was for everyone to dance as much as humanly possible.  I wanted the dance floor to be full at all times (I figured folks will go sit down and eat when they want to), so I communicated with my band that I wanted fun, upbeat songs that everyone could dance and sing along to.  What I found more important than letting them know the songs I wanted played, was letting them know which songs/genres I didn’t want played.

I requested my band sing current hits/modern-day music as well as some good 80s hits.  Sometimes people will include songs to appeal to the older guests but in my experience they’ll dance to anything, whether they actually know the song or not.  They enjoy watching us “kids” tear up the dance floor and will either join in on the fun or admire from the sidelines, so I wouldn’t stress too much about them (not that I think you should play Ying Ying Twins or anything…let’s try to still keep it classy for Grandma).  Jared and I had an after party that followed the reception, so I was able to play a little more of the “wild” music then without having to pass out earplugs (ex: The Motto – Drake/Lil Wayne, All I Do is Win – DJ Khaled, Blame It – Jamie Foxx & T Pain, etc).

Again even though music is SO subjective, since I’ve had quite a few friends ask me for my playlist through the years (including one of my closest friends Tanya who’s wedding I am serving as a bridesmaid for who asked me just this week) I figured I’d share just a sample of mine.  I have also added some songs for friends through the years.  Enjoy!

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  This week Jared and I will be celebrating our third wedding anniversary so I figured to make each of the blogs this week wedding themed, hope you enjoy!

airbrush

Since you probably won’t ever be photographed more in your life than on your wedding day, you want to make sure your makeup lasts all day long.  I love using airbrush foundation as I swear it could last you through your honeymoon.  If you’re a rookie to using airbrush makeup and you’re skeptical of how you’d like the look and feel of it, I highly recommend testing it out during a trial with your makeup artist if hiring one.  The trial can be used to see how you like the end result, as well as how long your makeup stayed for.  After you have your trial, I recommend taking some photos in different light so you can see how the makeup photographs.

primers

Moisturizing and using good primers for face, eyelid, lashes, and lips (refresh yourself with my old post on primers from way back when!) will also help the makeup lasts through the day and night.  You can of course also shop around for long wear makeup if you’d rather provide the makeup yourself.  Be sure to purchase the lip products that your makeup artist plans on using on you so you’re able to reapply.  Don’t forget to purchase the necessary liner, lipstick, and gloss (whatever your artist is using) so that you can properly mirror the look.  I personally recommend choosing a subtle lip, more neutral as opposed to bold.  Regardless of how much I love wearing bright lipsticks, I still suggest steering away from any trends including makeup.  Don’t get me wrong though, given the “look” you’re going for a classic red lip could look totally old school Hollywood glam!

false lashes

Just remember that because of the photos that you will be taking, go a little heavier on the makeup than you normally would.  Also consider going for a bit more drama with the help of false lashes, either individuals or strips.  Just make sure they don’t extend past your lateral lash line.  You also may want to opt for waterproof liner and mascara (as well as glue for your faux lashes!) for the big day if you think there’s even a possibility of shedding some tears.

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s wedding theme post!

Humpday Helper

Given the fact that I’m currently sleep training my son while Jared is in Tallahassee, this is my Humpday Helper.  Iced Dunkin Donuts, half decaf/half regular, cream, and sugar.  Boom [drop the mic].

What’s helping you get through the day and week?

Big Night, Big Day

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend!  We took advantage of some amaaaazing weather and enjoyed time with friends before Jared heads off to Tallahassee for his legislative session.  Not to mention I was of course glued to my TV last night to catch all of the Oscar coverage!  The dresses, makeup, and glamour [sigh]…loved it all!

I actually thought everyone looked great so I found myself struggling who I thought looked best.  I loved the metallics and nudes, the whites, and the classic blacks.  It was great to see everyone really step it up for Hollywood’s big night, especially Olivia Wilde, Kate Hudson, and Naomi Watts (still not over her Bulgari necklace and won’t be for some time).  Regardless of how the rest of the room looked, my eyes were of course glued to Lupita Nyong’o.  And then they of course welled up watching her win her golden statue.  All in all, a great night for fashion and film!

lupita

So I know I’m slacking on discussing my fav new makeup find, but today is a special day.  My grandfather, friend, hero, role model, and truly one of the coolest and smartest men I know is 89 years young today.  Grandpa, I wish I was there to help celebrate and pop a bottle of champagne with Grandma while you mix yourself a gin and tonic.  I love you to the moon and back and hope you have the happiest of birthdays, as you deserve it more than you even know.

Fashion Friday

The Mira Heel.  These pumps.  I love everything about them.  The colors are rich and luxe (true black, noble blue, and now available sandstone) and look great in my closet and on my feet.

noble blue

Who would have thought making a low-cut slanted front would make the world of a difference than just a regular pointed toe pump?  Oh wait, and they’re comfortable.  That’s right, these puppies are chic and comfy!!  Now all that needs to be done is to have them made in leather and in additional colors.  I’m talking to you Madewell!

Cheers to a great weekend!
