Miracle Mike

I know I’ve used my blog as a forum to ask for help in the past.  Whether it’s been for someone I personally know or through others and whether it’s right or wrong of me to do so, I’ve felt compelled to use this in attempt share a story and gain awareness.  Today I’m going to ask for help again.

mike and melanie

My friend Melanie from college is amazing.  She can put a smile on anyone’s face and is truly a ray of sunshine, not to mention she’s hysterical.  She met the love of her life, Mike, and they’ve been dating for the past 4 years and got engaged last March.  Though I’ve never met Mike and haven’t seen Melanie in quite some time, it’s clear that she’s the happiest girl in the world and I, myself, wore a huge grin while looking at their engagement photos that they recently took.

Well Melanie’s life has just been turned upside down when Mike was involved in a horrific accident last month.  He has been in the hospital ever since being treated for a laundry list of injuries, but the traumatic brain injury that he sustained is the most concerning of all.  Although Mike has health insurance, there are still numerous costs that he is facing including transporting him to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta on a medically staffed airplane which has to be paid out of pocket and upfront.  Please read the full story here and if you’re able to make any donation, big or small, it will be more than appreciated by Melanie, Mike, and their families and friends.

When it comes to makeup, I could totes be casted on TLC’s Hoarders.  I always have to remind myself to go through my stash and toss any oldies.  But when do your favorite products expire and belong in the trash?  Here are some guidelines to try and follow:

makeup

Mascara – Switch out a tube every 2 to 3 months.  Since this is an eye product, you should be quite diligent to avoid any bacteria growing and infections forming.

Foundation – This has a longer shelf life of 6 to 12 months.  You may notice some discoloration if it’s past its prime and could possibly cause irritation or breakouts.

Concealer – Can last a year or two, depending on whether it’s a liquid or stick (sticks can last longer).

Powder/Blush – Has the potential of lasting up to two years so it gives a little flexibility to hoard.

Eye Shadow – You should technically only keep these for about 3 months, but I can tell you I’m beyond guilty of keeping these for much longer (like year, oops!) as long as I make sure my brushes are clean.

Eye Liner – These have the same 3 month lifetime and I try to be much better with my liners to avoid any infections.

Lipstick/Lip Gloss – Some say to toss after a year but once again I’ll keep them for much longer until they harden up and don’t apply evenly.

Nail Polish – Since nothing bad will come of you using an old polish (no bacteria here!), use until the color has faded or the consistency has changed to thick and clumpy.

So is it time for you to do some Fall cleaning or are you going to star on the next episode of Hoarders?

Cosmetic Case of the Mondays

So as I’m adjusting to motherhood, I’m also adjusting to my new schedule of no work, no sleep, and no getting ready for the day.  Luckily my son isn’t too judgmental of me – just yet.  One thing that played in my favor having him unexpectedly early was that I had just gotten my nails done a couple days before and tried out CND’s new line of Vinylux nail polish.  You may already be familiar with CND as they make Shellac gel nail polish, but Vinylux is a breakthrough nail polish that lasts a whole week, without even a base coat!  It’s durability is increased with natural light and dries naturally for a flawless finish, with help from the Weekly Top Coat (necessary to use).

Don’t believe me?  Well, I just removed it from my nails yesterday.  That’s right, yesterday!  It stayed on for over two weeks!  Ok, so I may have had some serious growth and it didn’t look as gorg as it originally had when I got my mani, but it was still on and the color looked beautiful!  Still interested in using Shellac?  Well you can still use Vinylux on your toesies if you’d like and match it to your gel nails as many of the Vinylux shades match the Shellac shades!  What more could you ask for?!

Cheers to a great week!

New Addition to Live Love Lipstick

So I have to say that I’m so sorry for the week long hiatus, but I’m pretty sure I have the best excuse.  Ever.

Samuel

I’d like to introduce you to my son (still so amazingly crazy to say), Samuel Logan, who surprised us on Saturday, October 5th, and came over a month early.  Jared and I could not be happier and are overwhelmed by the love we have for this 6.2 pound matzah ball.

I vow to you guys to try my best and still blab about the latest in greatest in makeup, beauty, and fashion in between feedings, pumps, swaddles, and diaper changes.  However, if you saw my this past week you by no means would want to take advice from me.  Let’s hope that changes soon enough once I tackle this whole new mom thing.

Banana Nutella Smoothie

Being 8+ months preggo can be a little tricky when it comes to curing cravings but avoiding tipping the scale.  I’m also a Nutella nut.  Like I could eat anything on Fear Factor as long as you added a schmear of Nutella.  I nearly freaked when I stumbled upon this recipe from A Thrifty Diva Surviving Motherhood for a Healthy Banana Nutella Smoothie.  Healthy?  Nutella?  Smoothie?  Where do I start?!

banana nutella smoothie

Ingredients

One banana, sliced

Four heaping tablespoons Nutella

1/2 cup Greek yogurt

16 large cubes ice

Whipped cream (optional garnish)

Instructions

Add all four ingredients in blender

Blend until ice is blended

Pour into glass and garnish

Wait, that’s it?  I can’t wait to try this smoothie with breakfast or snack!
